Low Carb Solution

Hill's Prescription m/d as a low-carb solution for cats?

Hill's Prescription diet m/d has only 15% carbs as fed, 48% protein, with 20% fat. My cat isn't obese... but maybe this is an option to transition a cat into a solely wet food diet eventually. Any ideas? here are the ingredients: Dehydrated chicken and turkey protein, maize gluten meal, animal fat, ground maize, dehydrated beef and pork greaves, cellulose, rice protein concentrate, digest, L-lysine hydrochloride, potassium chloride, calcium sulphate, L-carnitine, taurine, ground rice, salt, vitamins and trace elements.

  1. My cat is on M/D, because he's diabetic! I don't know if it's a good diet for you, but you could CALL your vet and ask what the best would be. It could be that your vet will say that this is exactly the right food, too keep your cat healthy, but that is his / her decision. Good luck.
  2. Have two cats. They both are on Newmans Own dry food. Dry food keeps their teeth cleaner. They are both 'inside' cats so they get no fresh caught food (mice, etc.) They also don't get any canned food. Vet who specializes in cats says this is fine. They don't need wet food, just be sure to have water down for them. They like it fresh every day. Mine aren't obese either, but if they were I could just limit the amount of food I give them at night. I give them 1/4 cup in the morn. and a little less at night. Hills Sci-Diet is good . Little pricy, Newmans is about the same in the Grocery Store.
  3. MD is not the greatest, especially with the gluten meal, ground maize (ie corn), etc. Rather than going prescription, whether your cat is diabetic or not, look for commercial foods that do not contain wheat, corn, rice or soy.
